With the biotechnology start-up offensive, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) supports researchers from the life sciences who want to start a business and who want to make research ideas commercially viable.
Who is funded?
The GO-Bio funding initiative is aimed at research teams willing to set up a business with:
- younger scientists who are already experienced in research
- People with many years of experience in corporate research and development
- Doctors with several years of clinical experience
How is it funded?
TWO FUNDING PHASES
GO-Bio funding takes place in two phases, each lasting a maximum of three years:
In the first funding phase, the teams work out and evaluate the application potential. This phase is part of the academic sector, but preparatory measures for setting up a business are already taking place. At the same time, specific commercialization strategies for further implementation based on the scientific results are to be developed.
In the second funding phase, which is decided on after an interim evaluation, these strategies are transferred to commercial exploitation. Funding recipients are the founded companies, which have to raise a private co-financing as an important requirement for funding.
DELIVERY VOLUME
The BMBF generally provides between 15 and 30 million euros for each funding round. The amount of funding per project is individually dependent on the project content. In addition, the spin-off universities and research institutions can receive up to 350,000 euros for measures to strengthen technology transfer if a GO-Bio project has been successfully transferred to the second funding phase.
Requirements?
The project ideas should include research approaches from the life sciences with high commercial or clinical innovation potential and be geared towards economic use. The range of topics is deliberately broad.
The electronic application system "easy-Online" must be used to create project outlines and funding applications. A specialist jury then evaluates the submitted project ideas in a two-stage selection process.
